Hypnobirthing at Darent Valley Hospital: a first-time mum and her newborn after using hypnobirthing on Delivery Suite

Hypnobirthing at Darent Valley Hospital: How to Prepare for a Calm, Confident Birth

local antenatal guides Aug 19, 2026

If you're planning to give birth at Darent Valley Hospital, you might be wondering whether hypnobirthing is right for you.

Perhaps you've heard that hypnobirthing is mainly for homebirths or natural births.

Or maybe you're hoping to give birth at the Darent Valley Birth Centre, but want to be prepared in case you need to use the Delivery Suite.

The really good news is that hypnobirthing isn't for a particular type of birth.

It's a set of tools and knowledge that can help you approach labour feeling calmer, more informed and more confident...whatever happens on the day.

This is one of the things that makes hypnobirthing incredibly useful when you're planning a hospital birth, or if you're expecting to need interventions.

What is hypnobirthing?

At its simplest, hypnobirthing is about understanding how labour works and learning practical ways to stay calm and relaxed during birth.

But there's much more to it than passively listening to relaxation tracks.

You'll learn about the physical process of labour, how your hormones work, breathing and relaxation techniques, positions and movement, and tangible, practical ways your birth partner can support you when you need them most.

Most importantly, you'll learn how to make informed decisions rather than feeling like you're simply waiting for birth to "happen" to you and following instructions of the people around you.

Can hypnobirthing help if I'm giving birth at Darent Valley?

Absolutely yes!

Hypnobirthing isn't dependent on where you give birth.

You can use your breathing and relaxation techniques in the Birth Centre, on the Delivery Suite, at home or even while you're waiting for pain relief.

You can use hypnobirthing if labour starts spontaneously.

You can use it during an induction (I actually believe hypnobirthing is a 100% must-have for a positive induction).

You can use it alongside medical pain relief.

And you can use the mindset and communication tools if your plans change completely.

That's one of the reasons I think it's much more useful to think of hypnobirthing as birth preparation, rather than a particular type of birth to aim for.

Hypnobirthing at the Darent Valley Birth Centre

If you're hoping to give birth at the Birth Centre, hypnobirthing can fit particularly naturally alongside that approach.

The Birth Centre is designed to provide a more relaxed environment for women who are suitable for midwife-led care, with plenty of women-centered facilities for you to enjoy using, including birth pools.

If you're hoping for a calm, physiological birth, you may already be thinking about things like:

  • keeping the environment quiet and private

  • using water

  • staying mobile during labour

  • avoiding unnecessary interruptions

  • using breathing and relaxation

  • having your birth partner actively involved.

These are all things we explore in our hypnobirthing classes.

At the same time, it's important to have a flexible mindset too, as birth doesn't always follow the plans we make during pregnancy!

Being prepared for a positive birth means knowing what matters to you, understanding your options and feeling confident enough to adapt if circumstances change.

What if I end up on the Delivery Suite?

This is something I talk about with lots of parents.

You might be planning the Birth Centre and then find that you're advised to give birth on the Delivery Suite instead.

That doesn't mean you've suddenly lost all your birth preparation.

Your breathing techniques still work.

Your relaxation skills still work.

Your birth partner can still support you.

You can still ask questions, understand your options and create as calm an environment as circumstances allow.

And perhaps most importantly, you don't have to abandon the idea of a positive birth simply because your birth setting changes.

What if I want an epidural?

You can absolutely use hypnobirthing if you're planning to have an epidural.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about hypnobirthing.

The techniques you learn can help you stay calm and focused during early labour, while you're waiting for pain relief, or if you change your mind about what you want.

And sometimes there can be a wait for an epidural, or you may reach a point in labour where it's no longer possible to have one.

Having your own coping tools means you're not completely reliant on one particular form of pain relief.

You can read more about this in our guide:

Is Hypnobirthing Worth It If I Want an Epidural?

What if I'm induced?

Induction doesn't mean hypnobirthing goes out of the window either.

In fact, having practical tools for staying calm and comfortable can be particularly useful during an induction, when labour may involve more monitoring, examinations or time spent in hospital.

Understanding your options and knowing how to ask questions can also help you feel more involved in decisions throughout the process.

Hypnobirthing definitely is not about refusing interventions.

It's about understanding the options available and feeling confident making decisions that are right for you and your baby.

What can my birth partner actually do?

One of the biggest benefits of learning hypnobirthing together is that your birth partner doesn't have to stand beside you wondering what they're supposed to do.

They can learn how to:

  • support your breathing

  • help you relax during contractions

  • use massage and other comfort techniques

  • support you in different positions

  • create a calm environment

  • remind you of your preferences

  • help you ask questions and communicate with your care team

  • stay calm themselves when labour becomes intense.

That last one matters more than you might realise...

When you're in the middle of a contraction, you really don't want your partner asking, "What should I do?" It's so much more empowering to have a partner who already knows exactly what to do and is able to crack on with helping you in those tough moments!

What should I practise before giving birth at Darent Valley?

Hypnobirthing doesn't have to be time-consuming, and you don't need to spend hours every day preparing for birth.

A few simple things practised regularly can make a real difference.

Learn how labour works

Understanding what's happening inside your body can make contractions feel much less mysterious.

Practise your breathing

Your breathing is one of the simplest tools you can take with you into any birth setting.

Learn to relax

Practise noticing where you're holding tension and consciously releasing it...particularly in your jaw, shoulders, hands and pelvic floor.

Prepare your birth partner

Don't leave them to figure it out on the day.

Practise together so that supporting you during labour feels familiar.

Think about your preferences, rather than a rigid birth plan

It's useful to know what matters to you, but it's equally important to prepare for the possibility that things may change.

A flexible birth plan is often much more helpful than a list of things that "must" happen.

Your Birth Doesn't Have to Be Perfect to Be Positive

This is probably the most important thing I want parents to take away from hypnobirthing.

A positive birth doesn't necessarily mean a homebirth, a waterbirth or a birth without pain relief.

For me, positive birth is much more about how you feel throughout the experience.

  • Did you understand what was happening?
  • Did you feel listened to?
  • Did you feel involved in decisions?
  • Did you have someone supporting you?
  • Did you feel like you had tools to help you cope?

Those things really matter, and will shape how you feel about your birth for years to come.
