Giving Birth at Darent Valley Hospital: Birth Centre, Delivery Suite & Homebirth

local antenatal guides maternity services reviews Sep 15, 2025

Updated Aug 2026.

If you're planning to give birth at Darent Valley Hospital, you'll have several options to consider, including the Midwifery-led Birth Centre, Delivery Suite and homebirth.

Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford provides maternity care for families across Dartford, Bexley, Swanley, Gravesend and the surrounding areas. One of the things that makes it particularly appealing is the range of birth settings available, from a midwife-led birth centre to a Delivery Suite with access to obstetric and anaesthetic care.

I've put together this guide to help you understand the different options at Darent Valley, what you can expect and how you can prepare for the kind of birth you'd like, while keeping an open mind about the fact that birth doesn't always go exactly to plan.

I've had all three of my babies under the care of the Darent Valley maternity team: two on the Delivery Suite and one at home.

So this isn't just a hospital guide I've put together from reading the Trust website. I'm a local mum, birth educator and hypnobirthing teacher, and Darent Valley is a maternity service I know personally. I've also supported many local parents preparing for their births there through Rise & Glow.

Whether you’re dreaming of a calm, natural birth or want to know that full medical support is on hand if needed, here’s what you can expect when giving birth at Darent Valley.

The Birth Centre at Darent Valley

The Birth Centre at Darent Valley Hospital is a midwife-led unit designed for women who are suitable for midwife-led care and are planning a vaginal birth.

The Birth Centre offers a more relaxed environment than the main Delivery Suite, with facilities designed to support active labour and physiological birth.

Facilities include:

  • ensuite birthing rooms
  • birth pools subject to availability
  • birth balls and mats
  • space to move around during labour
  • facilities to support different birth positions
  • a quieter, more relaxed environment.

If you're hoping for a waterbirth, it's worth checking the current availability of the waterbirth service with your midwife, as this can change.

The Delivery Suite at Darent Valley Hospital

The Delivery Suite provides obstetric-led maternity care and is the setting for women who need, or choose, a higher level of medical support during labour and birth.

The Delivery Suite gives you access to:

  • obstetricians
  • midwives
  • anaesthetic services, including epidural pain relief
  • assisted vaginal birth if required
  • caesarean birth
  • additional monitoring and medical support when needed.

Choosing the Delivery Suite doesn't automatically mean that your birth will be highly medicalised. Your care will depend on your individual circumstances and what you and your maternity team decide is appropriate.

If you're planning to give birth on the Delivery Suite, you can still use breathing, relaxation, movement, positioning and other hypnobirthing techniques throughout labour.

Homebirth with Darent Valley

Homebirth is another option available through the Darent Valley maternity service for women who are suitable for planned homebirth.

If you're considering a homebirth, your community midwifery team can talk you through whether it's appropriate for you, what happens when labour starts, and what equipment and support will be available.

Homebirth can be particularly appealing if you want to labour in familiar surroundings and minimise unnecessary journeys or interruptions.

It's also worth remembering that planning a homebirth doesn't mean you have to be committed to staying at home whatever happens. Your midwife will discuss when a transfer to hospital might be recommended and what that process would look like.

Can I use Hypnobirthing at Darent Valley?

Absolutely. Hypnobirthing isn't a particular type of birth or something that only works in a birth centre.

You can use hypnobirthing techniques whether you're planning to give birth in the Birth Centre, on the Delivery Suite or at home.

The breathing, relaxation, visualisation and birth partner techniques you learn can be useful during spontaneous labour, induction and while you're waiting for pain relief — and the knowledge and decision-making tools can help if your plans change.

I've written a separate guide specifically about using hypnobirthing at Darent Valley Hospital

Darent Valley Birth Options Compared

Which birth setting should I choose at Darent Valley?

Birth setting May suit you if...
Birth Centre You would like a calmer environment with facilities supporting active, physiological birth.
Delivery Suite You need or prefer quick access to obstetric and anaesthetic care.
Homebirth You would prefer to labour and birth in your own surroundings.

πŸ‘‰ As of 2025, Darent Valley have started offering in-person Place of Birth options events so you can see the choices for yourself: from a natural birth in the midwife-led centre or at home, through to full medical support on the Delivery Suite if that becomes necessary. Talk to your midwife for more details about the next Place of Birth options event.

Can I Have a Waterbirth at Darent Valley Hospital?

Yes. Darent Valley's Birth Centre has facilities for water immersion and waterbirth, although availability can change. There is also one room on Delivery Suite with a birth pool.

The Trust temporarily suspended waterbirth and water immersion earlier in 2026, but its current website confirms that the service has now resumed, subject to availability.

If waterbirth is important to you, talk to your midwife during pregnancy and check the current arrangements before labour.

Positive Birth Stories from Darent Valley Mums

Of course, the best way to get a real sense of what it’s like to give birth somewhere is to hear from parents who’ve already been there.

I personally had all three of my babies under care of the Darent Valley Hospital midwives (two in Delivery Suite and one homebirth)  and I had an amazing experience each time.
