NCT, NHS or Hypnobirthing? Comparing Antenatal Classes in South East London & Kent (2026)
Jul 15, 2026If you've started looking for antenatal classes, you've probably realised there's a lot of choice.
NCT, NHS antenatal classes, Hypnobirthing, Happy Parents Happy Baby, Bump & Baby Club, independent birth educators...
So, how do you know which is right for you?
The truth is, there isn't a single "best" antenatal course. The right one really does depend on what you're hoping to get from it.
Some parents are looking to meet other local families. Others want practical tools to help them feel equipped during labour. Some want in-depth newborn education, while others simply want to feel less anxious about giving birth.
This guide compares some of the most popular antenatal classes available across South East London and Kent, helping you decide which feels like the best fit for your family.
NHS Antenatal Classes
Best for: A free introduction to labour, birth and caring for your baby.
Most NHS Trusts offer free antenatal classes, although what's available varies depending on where you live.
They'll usually cover topics such as:
-
what happens during labour
-
pain relief options
-
feeding your baby
-
caring for your newborn
-
recovery after birth
For many parents, these classes are a great starting point.
Things to consider:
-
availability varies between hospitals
-
classes are often online with 100+ parents
-
there may be less time for individual questions or discussion
NCT Classes
Best for: Meeting other local parents.
NCT has been supporting expectant families for decades and is one of the UK's best-known antenatal providers, a bit of a national institution!
Many parents choose NCT because of the friendships they build during the course, with groups often continuing to meet long after their babies arrive.
Topics generally include:
-
labour and birth
-
feeding
-
newborn care
-
early parenthood
Course content can vary depending on your local branch and course leader - for example, some NCT providers will do a short section on hypnobirthing, whereas other NCT providers don't cover it at all.
Happy Parents Happy Baby
Best for: Parents looking for a modern, friendly antenatal course with a strong community feel.
Happy Parents Happy Baby has become an increasingly popular option for expectant families across the UK.
Courses typically combine birth preparation with newborn care and practical advice for early parenthood, with an emphasis on helping parents feel informed and supported.
As with any independent provider, course content and format may vary depending on your local teacher.
Bump & Baby Club
Best for: Parents wanting practical antenatal education alongside opportunities to meet other local families.
Bump & Baby Club offers antenatal courses in many areas of the UK, covering topics including pregnancy, labour, birth and newborn care.
Their relaxed, friendly approach appeals to many parents, particularly those looking to build confidence before baby arrives.
As with other national providers, it's worth checking exactly what's included in your local course.
Rise & Glow Births
Best for: Parents looking for complete birth and baby preparation, with ongoing support before and after birth.
At Rise & Glow, we've designed our antenatal package to bridge the gap between traditional antenatal education and hypnobirthing.
Yes, you'll learn practical hypnobirthing techniques that will completely change the way you view birth.
But you'll also leave feeling deeply prepared for whichever way your birth goes on the day, confident in caring for your newborn, and supported right through those final weeks of pregnancy.
What's Included?
Three In-Person Birth Preparation Classes
Across three relaxed, friendly evening sessions, you'll learn:
-
how labour actually works
-
what your body is doing during contractions
-
breathing and relaxation techniques
-
practical hypnobirthing tools
-
birth positions
-
birth partner support toolkit
-
induction preparation
-
caesarean birth preparation
-
informed decision making
-
creating a flexible birth plan
Whether you're planning a hospital birth, birth centre birth or home birth, our aim is to help you feel calm, equipped and confident for the day you meet your baby.
Because a positive birth looks different for every family.
Two Live Online Baby Confidence Workshops
Unlike many antenatal courses, Rise & Glow support doesn't stop at birth.
Every booking also includes two live online "Baby Confidence" newborn care workshops covering:
-
understanding your newborn baby
- newborn sleep
-
soothing techniques
- skin-to-skin and babywearing
-
baby care essentials - bathing, nappies (disposable + reusable), elimination communication, skin and core care
-
realistic expectations of the early weeks
-
practical preparation for life with your baby
In particular, we focus on tuning in to the way that your baby is biologically wired to connect with you, and how we can respond to their needs.
This is a truly unique offering, and is something that generally is not offered by other antenatal providers. Parents leave feeling excited and well-equipped to enjoy life with their newborn baby.
A Complimentary 1:1 Final Stretch Zoom Call
When you're around 37–39 weeks pregnant, you'll be invited to book a private Zoom call with your Rise & Glow teacher.
It's a chance to ask last-minute questions, talk through your birth preferences, discuss induction if it's been mentioned, or simply enjoy a confidence boost before labour begins.
Having someone who already knows you and your birth plans can make such a difference to your state of mind in those final few weeks, when many expectant parents have a bit of a wobble as it all starts to feel real!
Support After Birth
One of the things that makes Rise & Glow a little different is that our relationship doesn't end when your baby is born.
Many parents go on to join our postnatal Mum & Baby Circles, giving them a chance to reconnect with familiar faces, meet other local parents and continue receiving support through those precious (and sometimes challenging!) first months.
