βHow Will I Actually Cope With Contractions?β
Jul 06, 2026A question almost every pregnant woman asks...
“How will I actually cope with contractions?”
I think nearly every pregnant woman wonders this at some point during pregnancy - I definitely did!
Because before you’ve experienced labour yourself, it’s hard to imagine how you’ll handle something that sounds so intense.
And often, that fear isn’t even really about pain
It’s about uncertainty... Not knowing what contractions will feel like, how long labour will last, or whether you’ll be able to handle it when things feel overwhelming.
I hear this concern all the time in my hypnobirthing classes as an antenatal teacher.
And I think the biggest misconception about labour is this idea that coping comes down to being naturally “good” at pain.
It really doesn’t (I promise!)
Coping In Labour Usually Isn’t About Being “Tough”
Most people who cope well during labour aren’t necessarily the people with the highest pain tolerance.
Usually, they’re the people who:
- understand what their body is doing
- feel safe and supported
- know how to relax where possible
- and have practical tools to lean on throughout labour.
Contractions aren’t random pain happening to you. They’re your body working incredibly hard and intelligently to birth your baby.
So What Actually Helps During Contractions?
There isn’t one magic technique that suddenly makes labour easy.
But there are lots of small things that can make contractions feel far more manageable.
Things like:
- breathing techniques
- relaxation
- movement and positioning
- massage
- water
- hypnobirthing tracks
- understanding what stage of labour you’re in
- and having a calm, supportive birth partner.
One of the biggest shifts I see in parents after hypnobirthing classes is that they stop seeing contractions as something to “fight against”.
Instead, they start understanding how to work with their body during labour, and that mindset shift alone can make a huge difference.
Hypnobirthing Doesn’t Mean You Won’t Feel Labour
This is important to say.
Hypnobirthing isn’t about pretending labour doesn’t hurt. And it definitely isn’t about floating through birth feeling nothing.
Labour WILL feel intense. Probably the most intense thing you'll ever experience.
But hypnobirthing gives you something to do during contractions rather than just feeling frightened by what’s happening.
You understand:
- why contractions feel the way they do
- how tension affects labour
- how adrenaline can increase fear and discomfort
- and how breathing and relaxation can help your body work more efficiently.
A lot of parents come away saying:
“I still found labour hard work… but I felt so much more capable than I expected to.”
You Don’t Have To “Just See What Happens”
Sometimes people assume birth preparation is only necessary if you’re planning a very specific type of birth.
But learning how to cope during labour is valuable whether you’re:
- planning a birth centre birth
- hoping for a home birth
- planning an epidural
- birthing in hospital
- or simply feeling anxious about the unknowns of labour.
Because even if birth doesn’t go exactly to plan, understanding what’s happening and having coping tools available can make the whole experience feel far less overwhelming.
