How Can My Birth Partner Help During Labour?

birth partner hypnobirthing faqs Jul 22, 2026

One of the biggest misconceptions about birth is that it's something one person does, while the other simply watches awkwardly from the sidelines, hoping for it all to be over!

But it actually doesn't have to feel that way.

With the right preparation, your birth partner can become one of your greatest sources of support throughout labour. They simply need a few practical tools, confidence and an understanding of how to support you when it matters most.

Birth is one of the first things you will do as a team for your baby, and can be an incredible experience for both parents. This is one of the reasons so many couples choose hypnobirthing.

With hypnobirthing, rather than preparing for birth on your own, you prepare as a team.

Together, you'll learn how labour works, how to create a calm environment, simple comfort techniques, ways to encourage labour to progress naturally, and how your birth partner can help you stay focused if plans change.

Many birth partners come to their first class worried they'll feel useless in labour, like a spare part.

By the end of the course, they feel fully prepared and excited for the big day!

Birth isn't something you should feel like you're doing alone - it's something you navigate together.

What Can My Birth Partner Actually Do During Labour?

The answer is: much more than you probably realise.

Your birth partner's role is incredibly important; they're there to help you feel safe.

Feeling safe isn't just about feeling emotionally supported. When you're able to relax and feel secure, your body is better able to produce the hormones that help labour progress. On the flip side, fear and stress can make it harder to relax and cope with contractions.

A calm, reassuring birth partner can make a real difference.

Help You Stay Calm During Contractions

When contractions become intense, it can be difficult to remember everything you've learnt during pregnancy.

This is where your birth partner comes in.

They can remind you to:

  • slow your breathing
  • relax your shoulders and jaw
  • change positions
  • sip water
  • focus on one contraction at a time
  • listen to your hypnobirthing tracks
  • remember that every contraction brings you one step closer to meeting your baby.

Create a Calm Birth Environment

Our surroundings can have a surprisingly big impact on how we experience labour.

Your birth partner can help create a space that feels calm and familiar by:

  • dimming the lights where possible
  • playing your chosen music or relaxation tracks
  • limiting unnecessary interruptions
  • helping you feel comfortable
  • protecting the atmosphere you've worked hard to create.

These small things can make a big difference.

Be Your Advocate

During labour, there may be times when you're deeply focused on coping with contractions.

Your birth partner can help by liaising with the midwives and obstreticians and:

  • asking questions if something isn't clear
  • making sure you understand your options
  • reminding you of your birth preferences
  • giving you time to think before making decisions where appropriate.

It's all about helping you feel informed and involved in your care.

Learn Comfort Techniques Before Birth

One of the reasons birth partners love our classes is because they leave with practical skills they can actually use.

You'll learn techniques including:

  • massage for labour
  • acupressure
  • breathing together
  • different birth positions
  • comfort measures for each stage of labour
  • ways to encourage relaxation during contractions.

Rather than wondering, "What should I be doing?", they'll have a toolkit of ideas ready to use, depending on what's going on in labour at the time.

Support You If Plans Change

No one can predict exactly how birth will unfold.

You might have the water birth you imagined.

You might decide you'd like an epidural.

You might need an induction or an unexpected caesarean birth.

Preparing together means your birth partner understands your priorities and can continue supporting you whatever happens.

A positive birth isn't about everything going exactly to plan - it's about feeling supported, confident and involved throughout.

Birth Partners Need Preparation Too

One thing people often forget is that birth partners can feel anxious as well.

It's completely normal.

Labour can feel daunting when you don't know what to expect, and I know plenty of women whose partners have fainted during labour!

That's why we involve birth partners throughout every class, to give them the knoweldge and tools to stay calm when things get intense.

By understanding how labour works and learning practical support techniques, parents finish the course feeling excited rather than apprehensive, and ready to tackle birth as a team!

Remember... You're a Team

One of my favourite things about teaching hypnobirthing is watching couples leave feeling like they're approaching birth together.

Instead of one person carrying all the responsibility, both parents understand what's happening, know how to respond, and feel ready to support each other.

Whatever kind of birth you're hoping for – hospital, birth centre or home – preparing as a team can make the experience feel calmer, more connected and much less overwhelming.

Remember that birth isn't something you have to get through alone.
